AI And the Crowd of New Companies Entering the Market are Making Branding More Important than Ever
and a fine selection of today's hand picked expiring domains from DSAD
I’ve been writing posts for 17 years, which also means I’ve been reviewing the names coming up for auction every single day—over 5,000 days in a row. I always figured we’d see fewer quality dot-coms expiring each year, but I thought the total number of domains expiring would increase due to the growing number of registrations and the addition of new TLDs.
That hasn’t exactly turned out to be the case. I’m seeing more TLD owners reclaiming expiring names and handing them off to other registrars—or eventually auctioning them themselves. If you look closely, there aren’t many non-dot-com names with bids. That could mean the alt-TLD names aren’t getting attention because they lack quality, but I think it’s more likely they simply aren’t listed at GoDaddy.
In the past, the “with bids” list at GoDaddy would usually hover around 125 domains—maybe 100 on a slower day. Lately, it’s been closer to 80, and today it’s all the way down to 69.
There are still days packed with amazing names, and GoDaddy easily has the best inventory of expired domains in the business. But the overall quantity is clearly down. What hasn’t dropped are the prices. GoDaddy reported a banner year between Afternic and its auction platform. It’s tough to tell if Afternic helped make up the volume gap, or if the rising price per domain did the trick.
Either way, one thing is clear—and you probably already know it. Securing a quality dot-com is getting exponentially more expensive with each passing year and I can see it in the daily stats
