DSAD's Saturday Picks: Auction Prices Have Hit a New Level
.
Every day I’m amazed at how high domain auctions go. Take DirectResponse.com yesterday. A fantastic name, but I had no idea it would go that high. I participate in .AI auctions daily, and pretty much anything decent goes for four figures. But it’s been like that for seven years now—it started that way from day one. Fortunately, the sales have kept up with these prices.
There’s only one issue: the multiples have held up for the names that sell, but the input cost to build a full portfolio has risen dramatically. I think it would be difficult to build a good portfolio with $100,000 now. Sure, you could build a great small portfolio—but a portfolio of 200 names? Impossible. It would be filled with hand registrations, closeouts, and average names that have already been picked over.
I think you can be profitable quickly, but this game has become hard to enter and make good money in the first few years. The domain game is either a long-term play or a very expensive one. That’s why we don’t see institutional buyers building portfolios—except for registrars.
I’m glad I built my portfolio a decade ago and can now use sales to keep growing it. It also helps to reinvest everything you make, aside from what you set aside for taxes.
It’s become a case of the rich getting richer, like all maturing markets. Those who were in early get to control the market. Bitcoin is no different. We’ve got people spending billions to build a large position, and then some guy from day one casually sells 80,000 BTC in 10K chunks—coins he mined for free 11 years ago.
I’m not quite that guy, but I’m the equivalent of the $1,000 BTC guy—and I like it that way.

Quote of the Day:
Domain of the DayBoners.com I know the owners of Boner and this would be a good add
