DSAD Wednesday: Godaddy Premium Auction Has Started
names like CreditRelief.com, InvestmentHub.com, PerfectVacation.com, CoffeeGrind.com, and hundreds more
Before we get started this is a reminder that Godaddy’s Premium Auction Event just kicked off. A BIG list of names are already getting bids. I’ll have a special rundown post later today but in the meantime you can see the auction HERE
I may not have this correct but a new domain investor and I were in a conversation about domain auctions and asked where the domains at auction come from. So I put this little chart together for him. I’m not 100% sure it’s accurate. Feel free to fill me in on what I missed. It looks like Namecheap and Godaddy are the two that have personal portfolios, they move through sales and auctions. Godaddy has their special auctions, which is made up of its inventory and other partners and customers. Namecheap puts theirs in with the expiry auctions. Its easy to tell if you look at expiry dates because they don’t expire until a year later and are not labeled Partner. I may be wrong, but it’s certainly not expiring.
I have always been a person who judges a domain by the quality of the domain and gives it no more value just because it’s expiring, but that’s not what the public feels. Expiry auctions go for much higher than a “regular” auction. I have no problem mixing them. Either you want the name or you don’t. How do you feel?
Platform | Auction Type | Private Auctions | Inventory Source | Labeling Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
NameJet | Expiry auctions from their registrars | Labeled as private auctions | Partner registrar expirations (e.g., Network Solutions) | Clear labeling of private auctions |
DropCatch | Drop auctions for contested caught names | Labeled as private auctions | Domains caught by DropCatch with multiple backorders | Only auctions if more than one request |
Dynadot | Expiring names from Dynadot | Private auctions separated | Only their own expiring inventory (partners?) | Private and public shown in different sections |
Namecheap | Mixed list of expiring and partner names | Not separated | Namecheap expiry and personal inventory + Identity Digital and partners | ID names labeled “partner” |
GoDaddy | Expiring domains from GoDaddy registrars | No private auctions | Godaddy registrars and other registars who partner to have GD sell their expiry stream | Owned Name Auctions Labeled as Such |
