Friday's Full of Great Domains at Auction at DSAD: EasyRest.com SoutheastCapital.com

and a few great sales from SAW

I have had one job interview in the last 30 years. I have only had five interviews in my entire life. I am a very good interviewee. Some call it being a BS artist, but I see it as relaying the right information and leaving out what does not matter. Where you cannot fake it is during aptitude-based interviews. When those came up, I would simply say, “I do not know how to do that, but I am smart enough to learn and hard working enough to learn quickly so I can teach the next person who will replace me when I move up.” That answer always worked.

People say you should not hire someone just because they played sports, and I agree. You do not hire only because of that, but if someone played a Division 1 sport and earned good grades, it tells me a lot. You can also look at the quality of their coursework. Some degrees are easier than others. A lot of athletes still work part-time when they are not in season. When I saw that, I knew I had a winner. Athletes have to put in a ton of work. You just hope they like their job as much as they liked their sport and will bring that same effort to your company.

Putting in the hours was never my issue. Motivation was never my issue. Finding employees with the same drive was hard. To be honest, hiring female employees came with challenges. They often were not the main breadwinner, so if a kid got sick, they stayed home. If their husband had time off for a vacation, you were told when they were going, not asked. If they were under 25 and married, you knew kids were likely coming. I never skipped hiring someone because of this, but I planned for it. I would staff about 20% more heavily with an all-female team to cover the gaps. They were incredible people and incredible workers. I would have been stupid not to have them on my team. It just took a little more scheduling.

Building that schedule and running the hiring process was the most rewarding and challenging part of my job. I took real pride in finding good people and judged myself on the results. I would track who did as well as I thought, who I missed on, and who the other managers liked more than I did. Sometimes I was wrong, and I learned from it. After 30 years, I became a strong judge of talent.

That being said, every once in a while you run into people like me who could talk circles around everyone but did not back it up with action. When that happened, I just moved them into sales. That was their real skill; they just did not know it yet.
