Happy Monday: Shane's Domain Auction Picks for August 18th
Don't punch down
One of the hardest things it took me forever to learn is that when you’re in total control, you don’t need to assert your control over employees or others below you. Doing so shows a lack of confidence and weakness. Saying “if you don’t like it, you can go somewhere else” should never be said out loud. You can think it, and you don’t have to like the questioning, but you need to keep it to yourself. Acknowledge the comment or question, but your answer should be constructive.
I used to get angry when people questioned my decisions. I felt they were wasting my time, and they didn’t have the information or accountability I had. It was easy for them to question or suggest changes because they weren’t responsible for the overall financial impact. Looking back, I realize most were just trying to help. There was no animosity intended. The problem wasn’t their questioning, it was how I answered.
There’s a saying, “don’t punch down.” It doesn’t mean others are lesser, but rather that you shouldn’t fight with people who aren’t as strong as you. Nobody wins. You beat someone when it was never a fair fight, and you gain nothing from it.
I say this in hindsight, but what brought it to mind was a post I saw on X. Someone complained that they didn’t like the UI of a site. The owner jumped in and told them if they didn’t like it, they could find another company. The company is doing great work and putting real effort into improving the site and infrastructure. I know that owner felt like I used to feel—working hard to build something good, only to hear someone complain that the colors weren’t to their liking. Old me would have reacted the same way. New me would have said something like, “We hope to have customizable looks in the future, but for now this is our starting point.” Whether that’s true or not, it’s the kind of answer that works. The customer likely would have left it at that. Instead, they got mad, and the company lost a customer—or even gained an enemy. That’s something you don’t need as a business owner, especially when you could have said nothing or something positive.
I think it’s great when owners interact with customers on social media. But owners need to be trained on how to respond. If they think they don’t need that training, then most likely they actually do.
