Saturday's Domain Auction Picks: Fire a Few Customers

One of the best parts of owning a business is having the ability to “fire” a customer when they’re bad for the financial or mental health of your company. It doesn’t happen often. Maybe once every few years. But there’s always that one who’s clearly taking advantage. Complaints aren’t the issue. It’s the customers who berate employees or make unreasonable demands. That power isn’t meant to push away people I don’t like or agree with. Some owners do that, and while it’s their right, it’s not good business.

Take the owner of Sticker Mule, for example. He publicly accused one of my favorite social media guys, WorkDieWear, of scamming him. The accusation wasn’t even close to true, and the post got destroyed online. I’ve never seen fewer likes and more comments calling someone out. I was one of them. Thinking I’d just be another voice in the crowd, I left a comment. He went to my X bio and replied with something like, “That’s coming from a guy who owns Beehouse, which gets no traffic or sales.”

I responded, “That’s literally a hobby company. And one that’s spent over $5K with you on labels and stickers.” His answer? “Go buy them somewhere else.” That’s exactly what bad business looks like. He got upset and told a good customer to get lost. And I wasn’t the only one. He did this with a lot of people. I felt bad for his employees. A business is a reflection of its owner, but I guarantee no one working there wanted me to leave. He’s just a troubled guy.

On the flip side, I once sold over a million dollars a year in mulch. I had exclusive contracts for certain territories. One landscaper, who bought six semis a year from me, called the supplier pretending to be out of state just to find out my price. Then he hired an out-of-state trucking company, picked up the mulch himself, and brought it into my market. When I found out, I told him it was shady. Sure, he saved money, but I had always treated him well.

He didn’t stop, so I told him he couldn’t buy anything else from me. It was all or nothing. His crews were furious. Instead of making one stop for everything, they had to drive an hour away or get it shipped in and keep it watered until the job was ready. In the end, it cost them more than they saved, and the quality of their jobs went down because we had some of the best plant availability in the country.

When my brother took over, he let them buy again. His thinking was that the $75K they spent with us offset what we lost in mulch. From that perspective, he was right. But I felt like right was right. In the end, maybe both sides suffered a bit. Those are the hard choices. Figuring out what’s best for the overall health of the company.

The good thing is, you get to choose.

The bad thing is, you have to choose.

Have a great weekend. Say it back 😀
