Shane's Auction Picks for Monday December 29th
I’ve written so many posts on here that I honestly have no idea what I’ve already talked about and what I haven’t.
One of my favorite little tricks for personalized emails is the Gmail “+” add-on.
When we sign up for things online, we often want a unique email. X is a good example, or any site where you want the information kept separate. The easiest way to do that is with a Gmail address and a plus sign.
The part after the + can be anything you want. Regardless of what you enter, the email still goes to your main inbox. You get a unique email address without having to manage multiple accounts, and you still receive all the security and login emails.
It also comes in handy for seeing who is selling, sharing, or scraping your email address.
For years, I’ve added a plus identifier when signing up for things just to see what happens. I’ve subscribed to dozens of newsletters, and it’s wild how many of those signups get passed along to other companies and turn into spam. Email lists are valuable, and a lot of people monetize them.
The nice part is I can prove it. The tag tells me exactly where the address came from, and I don’t have to make up a new email every time. I also use a consistent pattern so I always know which address I used.
Sorry if I’ve already talked about this before, but I used it a lot during Christmas shopping and I’m already seeing my email show up from places that have nothing to do with where I bought things.
Also, today could set the record of the past year and maybe ever for most domains sold at auction for one day for Godaddy. List of hundreds of 5Ns are up and all have bids. It’s at the bottom of the list
