Shane's Auction Picks for Wednesday, January 7th
I have been writing a “book” or at least writing. It’s taking lessons I’ve learned raising plants and how they can be used to tackle life. I’ve realized there are so many analogies to the process and if you think about it, can really help in realizing how life works. Here’s a chapter in raw form.
When we first started making roads at the nursery, we did it the simple way. We dumped 3/4 or 1 inch rock directly on the ground and rolled it in. At first, it felt solid. The ground was more stable than bare dirt, but it never lasted. Over time, the rock would slowly sink into the soil. Year after year it just disappeared. We kept adding more and more stone, thinking that eventually it would build into a solid base. It never did. It just kept swallowing material.
Finally, I talked to a professional and he told me I was doing it wrong. The road needed to be built from the bottom up. You had to dig it out and start with 3 to 4 inch rock as the base. On top of that, you add the 3/4 inch stone. Then you finish it with fines. The base had to be solid, and the gaps in that base had to be filled so everything locked together. Then the smallest spaces were filled with dust. Every layer mattered. Each size of material played a role. Together, they formed something strong and permanent.
Life works the same way.
You can keep adding “rock” to fix problems. More effort, more money, more activity. It works for a while, but it is temporary and it always requires more work later. Taking the time to build a real foundation changes everything. That foundation takes intention and detail. The strength comes not just from the big pieces, but from filling in the gaps.
Now when I look at problems or goals, I think in layers. The big rock. The medium rock. The dust. I try to identify what each of those represents and make sure they are all in place. That is how you build a path that holds up over time.
