Shane's Daily Domain Picks for Friday September 11th
Happy birthday to my little bro
Over the last 15 years I’ve had tens of thousands of people ask me for help or favors. In that same time, I’ve asked no more than 20. I’m the oldest grandchild and the oldest child, and I haven’t had a boss since I was 25. Sometimes it feels like I was born to lead the way.
What amazes me is how many people ask for favors and give nothing in return after I help. It’s as if I owed them. A thank you is always welcome and often enough, but when there’s silence or resentment if I don’t help, it makes me understand why some people never respond to requests at all.
One act a year ago changed how I handle favors. A friend, Chris, landed freelance work from my recommendation. I recommended him because he’s excellent at what he does, not just because we’re friends. In response, he sent me money to buy running shoes. I never expected anything beyond a thank you, but his thoughtful gesture made my day. It wasn’t about the money, I can buy shoes anytime, it was the fact that he understood what I enjoy and showed appreciation in a personal way.
Alan Dunn is another example. He has always been thoughtful, sending small gifts just to say thank you for being you. Those gestures from Chris and Alan inspired me to start sending out gratitude gifts every week. I don’t get everyone, but when someone brightens my day or helps me, I send a gift. Giving thanks feels just as good as receiving it. Helping others succeed means you too have succeeded.
As a leader, helping others is part of the role. Leaders rarely ask for help, even when they should. They like the challenge of solving problems and view asking for help as a shortcut. The only time they ask is when time is short or when someone can teach them a skill to use next time.
I’m not nearly as successful as many domain investors, but I’ve done well in life and I didn’t do it alone. I’m forever grateful to Travis, my partner. I couldn’t have done it without him. He’s another example of someone who leads his own life. He’s never had a boss and makes his own decisions about work and finances. We often talk through challenges, and the advice is usually the same: do what’s right for you, and others will benefit from that too.
