When buying .xyz names, one of the most important things to me is renewal cost. Quality will always come first, but renewals on .xyz vary so much that they can completely change the math.
When I bought Peach.xyz, one of the first things I checked was whether it carried a $500 or $1000 renewal, which many do. If it had, I would have bid very differently. Instead, it had a standard renewal, and that gave me a few extra thousand to put into the bid. Same with YFi.xyz, which I picked up yesterday. Both had standard renewals.
But not all are like that. Some LLL.xyz carry $320 renewals, which would more than double my holding cost. (Ironically, I own LLL.xyz itself.) That changes how patient I can be. Domains take time to sell, and patience costs money. If it’s $10 a year, no big deal. If it’s $320 a year, my patience shortens.
I assume most people think the same way, but I do see buyers roll the dice on high-renewal names. Their bet is that they can flip before the renewal comes due. What I think really happens is they hope the next buyer doesn’t check the renewal price. I see that constantly.
