Shane's Daily Picks for Saturday the 25th
Coming home and hopefully the sales will be there waiting
Heading back home after a month in the mountains. I came into the stay in the best shape I’ve been in for years, and it really paid off in my climbing and overall health. I handled all the 14ers with no problem and didn’t miss a single day of running or a hard hike. Thirty days straight. That said, it’s tough on the body to keep up that kind of effort. I dropped a ton of weight, and these last few days I’ve felt straight-up tired on my runs. Not during the day, but there’s just no gas in the tank.
I’ve slept like a baby. People usually struggle with sleep at this altitude, but my wife and I had zero issues. Some of the best nights of sleep all year. The mattress at the mountain house is way better than the one at home. Every year we say we’re going to buy the same one for home, and four years later we still haven’t. I think this time we will. Goes to show how important a good mattress is.
I do miss having an appetite. You lose it at altitude, and your stomach never feels quite right. We also have just one supermarket, and maybe five decent restaurants. So we barely ate out. I do like grabbing a Jimmy John’s or a Chipotle here and there, but we had zero fast food for a month. That probably helped with the weight loss.
What I’m not looking forward to is the heat. I haven’t seen 80 degrees in five weeks. Every morning was in the 40s, highs in the 70s, and no humidity. It was like fall every day. Back in Illinois, it’s a hellhole. High temps and humidity. I can easily picture a future with Florida winters, North Carolina or Illinois in the spring and fall, Leadville summers, and a ski month somewhere. Now I just need to sell a few more domains to afford a few more homes.
