Shane's Daily Post for Friday August 1st

One of the nice things about having my family live in the same place for 150 years is the amount of history. There’s a local Facebook historical account that shares old photos from town going back over a hundred years, and over time, some great ones of my family and our business have shown up.

We’ve been fortunate. Our family made a good living selling plants. People usually think of farmers making a living and building wealth through land, but they don’t often think of tree and plant growers doing the same. The truth is, you can actually make ten times more growing trees and shrubs. Pair that with living in a small town where everything is inexpensive, and it adds up to a good life. The historical society has even found some lost photos we’d never seen. Those pictures have sparked some great conversations and helped me learn more about my family than I ever had before.

A photo of my great-grandfather’s pool from the 1920s showed up recently. Evidently, it was one of the first private in-ground pools in Central Illinois. He built it himself. It was elegant in a simple way, just concrete, filters, and water. More of a fancy pond to a tree farmer. But what really stood out to me was the pattern: build wealth by making money, keeping expenses low, and letting profits compound. My family lived in the same house all their lives. They lived simply, bought land, grew crops, and reinvested. Every year, more land, more trees. They each had a few toys, and even in the 1920s, they bought summer homes. You had to be doing well to buy a summer home back then. It wasn’t like it is today.

Today a home is 6 to 8 times annual income. Back in the 20s it was 2 X 3. My family bought beach land in Naples Florida in the 20s through the 50s. Officially they had more wealth than most but what they really had was lost cost than most and a great business growing things people wanted. They also didn’t invest in the stock market, they only bought land because they yield from the land. So when the market crashed they still had land and while I’m sure the demand for things slowed, they didn’t lose their fortunes like many did and the compounding continued.

I now realize that I emulated what my family taught me. I just didn’t realize it until I was older and looked back at their journey and mine. Unironically the paths were the same

Quote of the Day:“Housing cost as a percentage of income was 12 % from 1900 until the early 1920s, when it increased to 20 % … by the mid‑1980s it reached 30 %.” — J. David Hulchanski
