Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Friday March 20th
I’ve said it for three years. Unless a name is a DNS name, it has no real value beyond being a vanity asset. Like a license plate. Yes, license plates can sell for a lot in some countries, but that’s as collectibles. I’m not arguing against that. They’re just not infrastructure.
Unstoppable Domains has now pivoted to real domains, which has understandably upset buyers of the Web3 strings they originally sold. ENS is still strong technology, but they’re not getting .eth at the root. Now they’re moving toward .ENS. If they grant .ENS names to existing .eth holders, that could create some value. Otherwise, .eth names will continue to fade.
The outcome is what domain investors have known all along. All roads lead back to DNS. Everything else rode the wave of crypto excitement. That wave has passed.
That doesn’t mean the value goes to zero overnight. It just trends that way over time.
They’ll end up where Handshake already is, sitting in the dusty corner of the asset folder.
PS: Those ID names that all those companies sold. A lot of them like .wallet, .crypto, etc will become real domains. Just not by the people who sold the IDs.
