Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Monday December 8th
I play in a Fantasy Premier League soccer league with other domain investors. Its a long season but I joined two weeks late so everyone got a boost of points and I’m trying to play catch up. Add in that I haven’t watched a Premier League game in a decade but I played soccer for 17 years and played in Europe for a few summers so I know the game. Just not the players.
I finally was getting the hang of the strategy, the points system, and getting to know the form of the players. I had a great week last week and made up some points on everyone. This week I had my lineup pegged and used a special play of 3 times the points of whomever I made captain. I had DanielMuñoz Mejía as my captain because he’s been playing incredibly. Then my friend Tony Dancaster, who knows more about Premier League than most people I know, put out a newsletter about how Haaland is by far the best player in the league and not putting him at captain in fantasy is giving up points. That’s who I had at captain and I got nervous and switched him back to captain.
Of course he got 2 points and my original guy got 14 points. So I logged 6 points instead of 42. That 42 would have been huge because almost everyone else was with Haaland. In short, I decided it was better to not lose points than to take the risk I could be further behind or make up points. No fault of Tony at all. His data was correct. What wasn’t correct is that there are always outliers and when you are behind and there is nothing to lose you go rougue.
In American football we do the same. When you have two receivers and one of them is a receiver for the team you are playing, you don’t start them unless they are extremely better than the other. Because every touchdown he catches, your opponent also gets points. You want to get unattatched points if you can.
Of course I haven’t won any leagues in years so this is all talk with no success to back it.
Quote of the Day: “In fantasy sports I draft with confidence, set lineups with hope, and lose with stunning consistency.”
