Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Monday February 2nd

My furnace is 22+ years old. It’s the last thing in my house that hasn’t been replaced.

My AC went out late summer. Not so much the AC itself, but the fan bearings went out, and it wasn’t a great quality unit to begin with. We started having trouble with the furnace and called in a friend who helps with the furnaces at the nursery when things get more than we can handle. I’ve worked on a lot of furnaces. We have over 40 at the nursery, so pretty much every week one of them has some kind of issue.

The problem with my heater was that the high-limit switch kept going off and causing a shutdown override on the furnace. I replaced it, but it still kept happening. I thought maybe my furnace was just too small for my house, since I finished the basement and now I’m heating a pretty big area.

When he saw it, he said the issue was actually the opposite. He said my furnace is too big for the house. He said, “Your wife has closed off a lot of the vents in the rooms you aren’t using, and that is choking out your furnace. It’s pumping hard, but the heat is backing up and getting your sensors too hot, which is causing them to trip.” She thought she was saving us money and actually she was causing more harm than good.

We opened all the vents and everything was good, but then it started shutting the gas down. It would come on, run for a bit, then shut itself off and go back into shutdown mode with the flashing lights. So I went through the stages again and everything looked okay, but I could only see the tip of the flame sensor. Turns out everything I couldn’t see was brown. The overheating had basically cooked the outside of the flame sensor, which caused the furnace to think the gas wasn’t coming on, so for safety it shut itself down. I took it out, scrubbed it back to shiny with some sandpaper, and ten minutes later had it back in.

My furnace has never run better. It’s holding temperature better than it has in three years, even in below-freezing weather. I 100% do not need a new furnace. I just need to maintain it and know how to use it properly. Fixing a furnace is so easy, especially with ChatGPT. Learning more about it will save you hundreds of dollars and a lot of headaches. If you have an extra igniter and flame sensor laying around, you’ll probably never have to call a heating and air guy.

Ironically, yesterday the glow igniter went out on the stove too. $21 on Amazon and I’ll have that swapped out as well. Looks like all those years at the nursery working on furnaces are serving me pretty well.
