Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Monday March 30th

One of the things I’ve noticed about certain Colorado towns is the community vibe. In these mountain towns, everyone is so relaxed. The attire, even for business, is comfortable and outdoorsy. It’s common for people to work during the day and then immediately head out for a walk, hike, or ride. Being active is the norm; I’ve seen essentially no one who is out of shape. Almost everyone smiles and acknowledges you, often asking what you’re up to, not out of nosiness, but out of a genuine curiosity about which trails are currently riding or hiking well.

In short, the happiness level appears to be five times higher than many other places I’ve visited. We aren’t talking about Aspen or Vail, areas filled with high-income second-home owners, but rather towns like Salida and Buena Vista. These are places without massive ski resorts.

A majority of the residents work remotely. They represent all kinds of industries, though most are computer-based. Because these are jobs where you can live anywhere, people have chosen to be here; they don’t live here out of necessity for employment, and it shows. More work and live than work to live.

For my entire life, I lived where I had to. I do love my hometown, it’s a university town, which carries its own youthful, vibrant energy. However, the lack of topography is an issue. While flat, open spaces have their own beauty, the combination of hot summers, cold winters, and endless wind can make for a long year and limits the “fun” factor. It’s great for growing crops, though!

My point is that many employers claim remote employees aren’t as productive or lack the bond of an in-office team. I think those employers overlook the importance of a happy employee. Someone who lives where they actually want to be is usually more fulfilled. The people here seem significantly happier, and my guess is that they are a pleasure to work with. I know this is a high-level observation, but I feel it’s a pretty accurate one.

Quote of the Day: “We hire adults. Adults don’t need to be watched to be productive. When you prioritize the ‘where’ over the ‘well-being,’ you lose the heart of your workforce.” — Reed Hastings, Co-founder of Netflix
