Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Monday November 10th
Over the last six days, I’ve been on five flights and stayed in four different hotels in four days. The quality of each hotel ranged from shithole to five-star.
After Miami, I flew to Texas for a race. I wanted to stay in downtown Austin the first night to have a good meal. My race was 50 miles away, so I had to rent a car to get there. I also needed a hotel close to the race so I wouldn’t have to get up too early, and finally, I needed a hotel near the airport because I had to return the car and catch a flight that boarded at 5:30 a.m.
The downtown hotel only had valet parking for $69. I figured there had to be cheaper options, so I drove around and found a big open lot that said “Apple Pay Parking.” I was pretty sure it wasn’t owned by Apple, but the striping in the lot looked nice. You can tell the quality of parking by the asphalt and the painted lines. The issue was a bridge across the street loaded with a homeless community. I didn’t mention that my car had been upgraded to a Dodge Ram Rebel—all decked out, only 15 miles on it. It was a badass truck and perfect for sleeping in the back.
As I was contemplating the parking, someone pulled up and parked. I asked her what she thought. “We safe?” I said. She told me she’d already parked there one night because she wasn’t paying $69 when she could park for $4. Yepfour dollars a day, three overnight. So I parked there, and everything went smoothly.
I had a nice meal, then drove to Burnet, Texas, to check in to my next hotel. At the desk, I handed over my ID, and the clerk said she had no record of my reservation and couldn’t add it because they were sold out for the race. I said, “I know—I’m here for the race.” I had stupidly booked through Hotels.com, even though I’ve told myself three times not to use them because they always screw up. I called Hotels.com, and they basically said sorry, we’ll get you the closest room. It was in a town 15 miles away, and they tried to put me in a $55 room. I said no way. I told them I wanted at least a $100 room and it needed to be free—not just exchanged, but refunded and then rebooked. They agreed and found me a place in a town called Marble Falls. It turned out to be only about 10 miles away and an easy drive.
The hotel was packed with Mexican workers. I’ve never seen so many white pickup trucks in one place. The place was trash, but the beds were clean. The guys were up all night, and the women were up at 5 a.m. talking—probably their wives, all in Spanish. Luckily, I had a loud sleep machine, so I heard none of it and headed to my race.
After the race, I had to drive back to Austin, check in to my hotel, drop off the truck, get a ride back to the hotel, and catch four hours of sleep.
The first flight went off fine, which surprised me considering what I’d heard. The issue was the connection, O’Hare was struggling. No gates, half the flights delayed, and no workers to guide planes around.
All in all, between the Miami and Texas trips, I was surprised how well things went. Not that everything went as planned, but things worked out. I always keep a positive mindset that they will. Some of my best stories and experiences have come from unplanned moments. Giving people a chance to make it right should always be the first option. Delays should be expected. Be prepared to have something to do while you wait.
I’m typing this during an unexpected delay. I had to go over this list at some point today, so why not do it while I wait to find out when I’ll get home? PS: That’s why I took the 6 a.m. flight, it gave me the best chance for delays and still enough time to get home. 3 gate changes later I’ll get there eventually.
