Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Monday October 27th
I have a podcast coming out this week with Andrew at Domain Name Wire where I talk about some of my recent progress, or lack of it, in my side businesses and domain investing. One of the main things I share is how much the online business model has changed. The idea of starting with a website full of content and hoping revenue comes from advertising is cooked. It’s over.
The most successful businesses now are started by people who already have a big online presence. They use that following to launch a product. You start with people who enjoy your content and trust your expertise. They’re far more likely to buy what you recommend. Doing it in reverse no longer works. Even if you have good content, it just becomes AI-fed content, and the chance someone comes back to buy drops fast.
I’ve talked to several marketing managers from nine-figure businesses over the last few months, and they all said the same thing. Their advice to me was: don’t start a site, don’t make the newsletter the main focus. Get on social media, be yourself, and share daily. Be front-facing if you like the camera or use voice-over if you don’t. Occasionally show your face so people know who you are. Post, post, postt, and have fun with it.
Being average at a lot of things and great at one definitely applies here too. Focus and lean in. This doesn’t take away the value of domains, but it does mean fewer people will buy a domain first. Social media accounts now hold more value early on. They’ll still build a brand and eventually buy a domain, it just changes the order and the timing. Maybe they’ll buy one and sit on it for a while. Hard to say. Things are changing fast.
What hasn’t changed is that online presence grows more important every year. And as domain investors, we make our living owning online presence. That’s a good thing.
Quote of the Day: “The appraisal may sway their offer, but it doesn’t sway their desire. It’s up to me to take that perceived value and negotiate to a good price for both.” — Shane Cultra
