Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Saturday December 20th

Every day I watch a few hours of people trying hard things. Running, climbing. Anything that involves hard work and usually suffering. It makes me sound like a masochist, but it is more about purpose, the idea of why not me, and mental training.

Purpose: training or preparing for an action is what gives us purpose. In order to get better, we have to train. That could be for business, a career, or a skill you would like to have. It all requires training. It is not the final event where we spend the most time, it is the training and the prep. I thrive on that daily routine. Everyone is different. Whether I like it or hate it each time, the reality is my best day has a routine built into it. The difference between my working days and my “retirement” days is that there is some free time within them that is not defined.

Why not me. Every time I see someone doing something I would like to do, I ask myself, “Why not me?” “What would stop me?” When I see a dunk, I know I cannot. Height and age. I enjoy others doing it, but I eliminate anything that is 100 percent not possible because of real blockers. Then there are things I am capable of, but not willing to put in the time for. Knowing I would have to do that, and only that, for years to become proficient. Then there is the rest. The more I watch people who are similar to me doing hard things, the more I watch how they prepare. A high percentage of hard things are accomplished through mental fortitude and preparation, and these videos teach me how, or where, to find that.

Mental training: as I said above, mental training is as important as physical training. Your body is a wall of protection. It was made to protect you. When you do things above and beyond your comfort zone, the mind steps in like a big brother and tries to stop you. It creates reasons in your brain and then moves to the physical. Lactic acid in your legs, cramps in your stomach, difficulty breathing. All ways of slowing you down. This can be overcome if you slowly introduce these things and show your body that you are not going to die. I believe even watching others do it subconsciously releases some of these protectors.

Your brain is yours, but I treat it like a pet. Training it and teaching it new things. Being careful not to introduce too much at once, because it can overwhelm. Fear is a dream killer. If overwhelmed, it does not settle into a routine. It stays in the “I don’t trust you” section. You want your brain to feel like it has seen this before and does not need to react. That is the goal.

Some would say I am overthinking this stuff, but I do not think so. Our body and mind are machines. Smart machines. They must be maintained, taught, and managed if you want to get the most out of life.

Quote of the Day: “The body achieves what the mind believes.” -Napoleon Hill
