Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Saturday December 27th
One of the things I have worked hard on this year is understanding recovery and mental fortitude. Mental strength and fortitude are not something you are born with. There are certainly personality types that are drawn to hard things and accomplishment. People who tend to be tougher and more confident than others. But it is proven that this comes from personal development, whether intentional or unintentional.
Self motivation books have been around forever. Atomic Habits is one of my favorite books ever written. There are many ways to accomplish mental growth, but one that is often overlooked is the restoration of the brain and body so you can rebuild and grow. I have found that good recovery can make gains two to three times greater than working with a tired asset. When you look at banned drugs for Olympic athletes, almost all of them are drugs that make the body recover quicker. Steroids let the body recover so you can hit more hard workouts and let gains build faster. EPO for runners does the same thing. Better recovery lets you work harder.
People often feel like they are wasting time when they rest, when in reality they get a free day to do other things and their brain or body workouts are better than if done back to back.
The mind is the strongest asset we have. If convinced, it can do horrible things to your body or, on the opposite end, allow it to achieve tasks way above and beyond what seems possible. Your mind controls everything about you. Working on positivity and training yourself toward that positivity will help you accomplish more than repeating a physical act over and over.
Getting to the “why not?” phase, where you think you cannot and then say “why not,” is where fun things happen. Obviously, if you are 5 foot 2 and want to dunk a basketball, that is out of the question for most people. But tell that to Muggsy Bogues. There are people at that height who have dunked. So you could say why not if you were younger. At 50, you are not going to. There are physical limits to what you can realistically accomplish, but those limits may be higher than you ever knew.
The hardest part after “why not” is the amount of time and dedication required to meet your goals. When you dive into greatness, you realize greatness requires an immense amount of time and dedication. It also requires getting past not wanting to do the daily requirements of training. Ninety nine percent of people cannot get past this. They start and then quit. They are driven in the beginning and then lose momentum and drive.
This is part of what I am working on daily. First, setting realistic goals of what is possible. Goals that are challenging and above what I think is possible, but not so high that I am wasting my time on something I never had a chance at. Second, working through the monotonous days and the times when I say, “I do not want to do this today.” Finding little things I love about the process, enjoying completions, and celebrating small victories. Showing gratitude for accomplishments along the way.
Everyone has a different method, but the backbone of mental fortitude is built on the same structure. Wringing the brain sponge of the useless and non-positive and filling it with hope, excitement, and a positive attitude. That wringing out and filling up is daily.
2026 will be another year of mental growth as my physical growth plateaus or falls. When it all adds up, I am still a stronger person.
