Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Saturday February 14th

Happy Valentines Day

My dad remarried the same year I got married. We have both now been married to our spouses for 30 years.

It is always a little tough when a parent remarries, but in my case this person also became my boss at work. She was very demanding and very intentional about making sure I was not treated like a nepo baby. I have always been a hard worker, but her style was not my favorite.

That said, there is one thing she does that I will always respect.

She takes care of my dad and makes him happy.

That is worth gold.

Her birthday is the day before Valentine’s Day, and I imagine she grew up a little like a Christmas baby. Always getting the two for one treatment on gifts. I have missed a few years, but even though she and I have not always gotten along, I always try to send her flowers on her birthday.

She loves flowers. And I want her to know I am thankful for her.

Do I always like how I am talked to or treated? No. But I am mature and self aware enough to understand that her job is to protect and take care of her husband.

There is plenty of world history showing how kids can ruin a business or take advantage of their parents. She is literally doing her job.

For that, I send flowers and thank yous. Not because everything is perfect between us, but because I genuinely appreciate the way she takes care of my dad and makes him happy.

It is not about me. It is about him.

So when I think about Valentine’s Day, I do not think about a crush I had in high school or filling out little Valentines. Although that part was fun, and let’s be honest, a little nerve wracking when you are five and trying to figure out who to give them to.

I think about her loving my dad.

You have heard me say this here and on a million podcasts. As a father, your only real job to your kids is to love their mother. That is all they want. Do that, be respectful to her, and you will win your kids’ hearts.

The same goes for the person who loves and takes care of your dad.

Quote of the Day:We are most alive when we are taking care of someone we love.” -Thich Nhat Hanh
