Shane's Domain Auction Picks for Monday March 16th
Good news, I’m just fine. The marathon went well, and I actually feel better after than before. I think it knocked the cold or flu out of me. It’s hard on the body this time of year in the U.S. because of the huge weather fluctuations. We see 50-degree changes daily and big barometric swings. This 100% affects mood and health.
One of the things I like about the high country of Colorado is the amount of sunlight and foot-candles of daily light. In the nursery and greenhouse business, we don’t worry as much about temperature as we do sunlight. Sunlight warms the greenhouses regardless of the temperatures outside. It can be 20 degrees, but if it’s sunny, the greenhouses will be 80 degrees. Nighttime is a different problem, but a sunny winter or early spring saves tens of thousands.
Just as important, everyone’s mood improves. People are happier with good sunlight. Humans perk up with sunlight and the transition from cold to warm. It’s why we wear shorts at 55 degrees in spring but parkas at 55 when we move from summer into fall. We regress into fall but perk up in spring.
Why is there more sun in the mountains? Thinner and drier air means clouds hold less moisture. Moisture in clouds is what creates shade. There’s also less atmosphere at this elevation. Clouds tend to form later in the day, so mornings are often sunny. As clouds move over the mountains, they drop their moisture on the other side.
Quote of the Day: “Mountain air and mountain sunshine have a way of setting a man right again.” -Hal Borland
