Shane's Expired Domain Auction Picks for Saturday, October 4th
Happy Saturday. The other day I was listening to a podcast and one of the speakers attributed his success to being able to become anyone he wanted when he moved somewhere new and nobody knew him. Reflecting on that got me thinking. I used to believe that my dad moving us every four years to a new city for work was hard, but in reality it was the key to my growth. Kids at a new school can get labeled quickly. The nerd, the athlete, the smart one, the kid with this or that. At the same time, you could get ahead of it and decide who you wanted to be. You could dress differently, focus on one sport, essentially step into a new role. After a few moves I realized who the cool kids were in every school. Good athletes always seemed to do fine.
I was always one of the better athletes, so I leaned into that. Soccer was my specialty and I crushed it in kickball. I was always picked first. I also had really good hands and could catch, so dodgeball was my game too. Every time I moved to a new school I could start fresh. Some might look at being the new guy as a negative, but there is always some mystery around the new person and I took advantage of that. Another benefit was if you struggled in a subject, at the new school you could start over and do much better. They had no idea you had already taken Algebra 2 at your last school. My junior high in North Carolina was ahead of my high school in Chicago, so I repeated a few classes and looked like a genius. Cs turned into As.
My daughter figured this out as well. We lived in the same house her whole life and she went to school with the same 90 kids in her grade from kindergarten through eighth. She wanted a fresh start and chose a different high school instead of following the rest of her class. She said she was tired of being known for things she had done in second grade. She wanted to be a new person. I totally understood. Familiarity is great, but we all need fresh starts to invigorate us. Even growing up.
