Shane's Monday Domain Auction Picks
...and Airport Lounges are now more crowded and a worse experience than the terminal
The airport lounge experience now sucks for most people. Once a credit card got you in it was over. Everyone spends money. What everyone doesn’t do is spend a lot of money flying. When the lounges were only for business class and frequent flyers it was an amazing experience. I’m not saying the every day flyer should not have a nice airport experience. I think airports should be more like Asia’s experience. Clean and comfortable. I’m not actually sure how to solve the issue of overcrowded lounges other than to make it for the most exclusive credit cards or get rid of the credit card pathway. I am only saying is I no longer view it as a perk in the US. It’s like the”free breakfast” at hotels. Which now are hard boiled eggs, runny eggs, cold sausage and bad bagels and a yogurt. If you’re lucky some oatmeal and a waffle maker. That’s what airport lounges have turned in to.
The Qatar, Turkish, Virgin, and often Centurian lounges are usually great. Amex lounges are usually pretty good. The Chase Saphire average lounge is trash. Saphire Reserve moving up to $795 may scare off a lot of people so that may help. I don’t fly enough on the same airline to get many points and when flying domestic I don’t fly business and don’t care too much about lounges because I tend to fly out of Indy which is great and don’t need a lounge. When I fly overseas I almost always fly business and the lounges come with the ticket. The US side is rough out of Chicago but once I get overseas its something I look forward to coming home. I hope the US will get the lounges back to those levels. Meaning kick out the credit card people. Which ironically is me
Quote of the Day:“The democratization of lounge access has diluted the experience for those it was originally built for.”– Brian Kelly, The Points Guy
