Shane's Picks of Domains at Auction for Wednesday October 22nd
I wrote a post joking about how fraternities have gone soft now that hazing and initiations are gone. I meant it as a joke, but there is truth in it. We have removed danger, pain, and the chance of injury from almost every part of daily life. I am not saying we should bring those things back on purpose. I am saying that the fear of them, real or imagined, creates bonds. In fraternities, the angst was usually in good fun. For every story of hazing gone wrong, there were thousands more about people looking out for each other, helping with grades, and following rules of expected behavior.
How do you bond thirty eighteen-year-old men? History shows that shared hardship does it. War, poverty, struggle, and sports all create lifelong bonds.
The fraternity system was built on old military traditions. Rush and pledging were modeled after boot camp and early military training. The goal was not just to toughen people up but to build loyalty and teamwork.
Fraternities copied that structure and added their own version of hardship, real or not. To someone who has faced real adversity, it might seem silly. But for many of these privileged young men, it was the first time they were not treated as special. They got yelled at, did physical work, stayed up late, and faced consequences for mistakes. Most of their lives they had been protected and praised. For one semester, they were humbled. They had to live by a code or be kicked out. The initiated brothers were expected to live by that same code. Not everyone did, and young men make plenty of bad choices, but at least there were boundaries.
I am not defending every act or event that ever happened in a fraternity. Some went too far, and there is a reason movies get made about them. But I will never forget those days because they were hard. It took real work to balance grades and pledging. It meant something to have a hundred people who would help you with anything. That mattered when you were far from home for the first time. It felt like the military without the fighting, the same brotherhood, and the same lessons. I would have my son go through it. It makes you a man, and there is not much left in life that does that except time
