Shane's Wednesday Auction Picks: Big Beautiful Bill of Domain Names

The latest news is the removal of tax credits for solar and cuts to Medicare by the government. As usual, most people have no real idea what’s going on with the insurance part of the bill, but the solar side is pretty clear. Trump wants to promote traditional energy corporations, and one of the easiest ways is to cut subsidies for new players in alternative energy.

Of course, the U.S. has spent $45 billion subsidizing ethanol, which nobody uses. You literally get worse gas mileage, so it ends up costing more per mile. The product is 75% subsidized, and still, no one wants it. At least solar and electric cars are being used more and more.

Solar still isn’t cost-effective for me. Even with incentives, the payback period was 20 years. Now it’s probably 30. I also don’t drive much, so an electric car would be more for the tech than for gas savings. Still, I think these two markets will keep moving forward, even without big incentives. Energy companies were already about to stop buying back excess energy, which used to be a big part of the payback equation, selling your peak energy.

I think there will be resellers popping up to help find buyers for that energy, especially in areas with high solar output. I’m still a big buyer of solar domains and think it’s the future, rooftops, parking garages, even roads.

Now on to medical. I’ve talked about medical domains several times. I’m very bullish on anything direct-to-consumer in the medical space. Health, care, senior, med, any health care–related keywords. I think they need to be in .com or .org. Medical companies seem to prefer the more traditional extensions.

This latest bill is pushing private health care to be more cost-effective, encouraging telehealth and preventative care to reduce what Medicare and Medicaid have to cover. They’re shifting the burden but making it easier to carry by allowing coverage to be pre-deductible and built into plans.

In short, I think the bill is saying, “We’re no longer going to cover people who aren’t working, volunteering, or in school.” They’re also starting to realize big medical is taking advantage of the system, and they’re letting insurance companies pick newer, more efficient alternatives.

That means a wave of new companies snapping up domain names. Good for us.
