Shardne's List of Domains at Auction for Wednesday July 23rd
AI is not going to change everything
I hear parents saying, “It’s tough to raise a kid right now with all the screens and now AI.”
Raising kids has never been easy. But it’s also never really changed. As parents, we set norms. You’ve heard me say that many times. Kids do what you do. They emphasize what you put emphasis on. They fill the holes you create.
I found that tracking my kid and knowing what she was up to made parenting so much easier. My parents had to guess where I was, if I was still okay. The decisions you’re making outside the view of your parents haven’t changed. You raise them to make good decisions, and no technology is going to change your inability to control what those results are.
“When my kid is on the Internet, they feel inferior because they only see the best.” Then start parenting. They were never the prettiest or the best at everything. Promote pride in the work, the practice, the improvement, the fun, the camaraderie. There is only one “best,” so stop emphasizing that.
When a kid falls and everyone yells, “Ooohhh!” or shows signs of concern, the kid usually starts crying. If the people in the room yell “ta-da!” or start clapping and cheering, the kid starts laughing and keeps moving. That is a perfect example of how your kid reacts to your actions.
I’m no parenting expert and probably a 6 out of 10 as a parent. Fortunately, I had a co-parent to make up the difference.
Have you let your kids know your expectations as a person? Have they ever seen a written document or had a talk about how, as a representative of your family, they should behave and live their life? It is important. Norms are usually set through action, but as they get older, that can be verbal or written. These are the expectations of a great person, and we are great people.
So parenting has not gotten harder. It has changed in many ways. Some things that were hard are easier now, but there are other new obstacles to making good decisions.
What has gotten harder is the attention span of parents.
The bar in life keeps getting raised. Making more money, better cars, travel expectations, TikTok, and social media. Parents are busier than ever, and parenting takes a lot of time.
Yes, I am glad I do not have to raise kids right now, but I already did. I look forward to grandkids and being the fun grandpa instead of running to the third practice of the week and grabbing a quick dinner.
I do miss having those responsibilities, but I take pride in the fact that I was aware of my role and the impact my actions had on a young woman down the road.
I hope you do the same.
